Las islas Baleares durante la Antig??edad Tard??a (siglos III-X)

This volume brings together different contributions on the history and archaeology of the Balearic Islands during Late Antiquity. Together, these contributions provide an overview of the period between the 3rd and 10th centuries AD, traditionally considered to be one of the least known periods in the history of the islands. The scarcity of written sources and, to a certain extent, of archaeological research, but also the historiographical influence of the ???dark ages???, had given rise to a negative perception of these moments in island history and relegated the archipelago to a marginal role. It should be remembered, however, that the Balearic Islands were located in a strategic position on the trade routes of the western Mediterranean. It was precisely this location that made them a target for Rome, which occupied the Balearic Islands (Mallorca and Menorca) in 123 BC. In the 4th century AD, they came to constitute an independent province within the Roman Empire, before being conquered successively by the Vandals (455 AD) and Byzantines (534 AD) and ending up in Islamic hands at the beginning of the 10th century. This volume brings together, without being exhaustive, some examples of historical and archaeological research that have led to a notable improvement in our knowledge of this period. Undoubtedly, the research carried out in recent decades, both in academia and in preventive or emergency archaeology, has contributed to a substantial improvement in our knowledge of this long period of transition, a period in which the islands of the Balearic archipelago were transformed and finally entered the Middle Ages.

Este volumen colectivo recoge diferentes contribuciones sobre la historia y la arqueolog??a de las islas Baleares durante la Antig??edad tard??a. En su conjunto, estas aportaciones ofrecen una visi??n general entre el siglo III y X d. C., un per??odo considerado tradicionalmente como uno de los peor conocidos de la historia insular. La escasez de fuentes escritas y, en cierta forma, de investigaci??n arqueol??gica, pero tambi??n la influencia historiogr??fica de las ???dark ages???, hab??an suscitado una percepci??n negativa de estos momentos de la historia insular y relegado al archipi??lago a un papel marginal. Cabe recordar, no obstante, que las Baleares estaban situadas en un lugar estrat??gico en las rutas comerciales del Mediterr??neo occidental. Fue precisamente esa ubicaci??n la que las convirti?? en objetivo de Roma, que ocup?? las Baleares (Mallorca y Menorca) en el 123 a. C. En el siglo IV d. C. llegaron a constituir una provincia independiente dentro del Imperio romano, para ser conquistadas sucesivamente por v??ndalos (455 d. C.) y bizantinos (534 d. C.) y terminar en manos isl??micas a inicios del siglo X. El volumen re??ne, sin ??nimo de exhaustividad, algunos ejemplos de investigaci??n hist??rica y arqueol??gica que han permitido una mejora notable en el conocimiento de este per??odo. Sin duda, la investigaci??n desarrollada en estos ??ltimos decenios, tanto desde la academia como desde la arqueolog??a preventiva o de urgencia, ha contribuido a mejorar sustancialmente nuestro conocimiento de este dilatado per??odo de transici??n, un per??odo en el que las islas del archipi??lago balear se transformaron y se adentraron, finalmente, en la Edad Media.
