The Guadalquivir River has been a feature of the identities of the communities settled around it throughout history. This book aims to reflect on contemporary threats to the sustainability of the region's complex cultural landscapes from multiple perspectives, including archaeology, the natural environment, didactics, new technologies and tourism.

From its source in Sierra de Cazorla to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean, the Guadalquivir River has been a feature of the identities of the communities settled around it throughout history. The resources provided by the river itself, its tributaries and its vast valley have contributed to the survival, well-being and development of different cultures. As a result of this relationship between people and terrain, various cultural landscapes have been created. However, the political, economic and health situation of recent years has threatened the sustainability of some of them, as well as its heritage, and in many cases they are condemned to abandonment and oblivion.

The present monograph arose to reflect on this complex situation from multiple perspectives, including archaeology, the natural environment, didactics, new technologies and tourism. It is the result of collaboration by leading professionals and researchers from diverse academic fields. Together they aim to analyse various realities; to identify the heritage needs we face today; and to suggest proposals to (re)activate the cultural industries of the Guadalquivir Valley.

Desde su nacimiento en la Sierra de Cazorla hasta su desembocadura en el oc??ano Atl??ntico, el r??o Guadalquivir ha sido a lo largo de la Historia un factor identitario de las comunidades asentadas en torno a ??l. Los recursos proporcionados por el propio r??o, sus afluentes y su extenso valle han contribuido a la supervivencia, bienestar y desarrollo de diferentes culturas. Fruto de esta relaci??n entre el hombre y el territorio se han ido generando diversos paisajes culturales. No obstante, la situaci??n pol??tica, econ??mica y sanitaria de los ??ltimos a??os ha provocado que la sostenibilidad de algunos de ellos se vea amenazada, al igual que sus bienes patrimoniales, condenados en muchos casos al abandono y el olvido.

La presente monograf??a surge con el objetivo de reflexionar sobre esta compleja situaci??n desde m??ltiples perspectivas, incluyendo la arqueolog??a, el medio natural, la did??ctica, las nuevas tecnolog??as y el turismo. Para ello hemos contado con la colaboraci??n de reputados profesionales e investigadores procedentes de diversos ??mbitos acad??micos. Entre todos hemos tratado de analizar diversas realidades, exponer las necesidades patrimoniales a la que nos enfrentamos hoy y sugerir propuestas para (re)activar las industrias culturales de la cuenca del Guadalquivir.

About the Author

Desiderio Vaquerizo-Gil is a Full Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cordoba (Spain). Alongside his research on the Roman funerary and domestic spheres, Prof. Vaquerizo-Gil is prominent for his tireless defence of Archaeology as a historical science and as a resource for the future development of contemporary societies.

Ana Ruiz-Osuna is an Associate Professor at the University of Cordoba (Spain). She is author of several monographs and articles on funerary monumentalization in Ancient Rome. She is also immersed in the management of historical and archaeological heritage from multiple perspectives.

Bel??n V??zquez-Navajas is a Research Associate at the University of Cordoba (Spain). She is currently coordinating a multidisciplinary project on historical and natural landscapes in the Guadalquivir Valley (Andalusia). Her principal research interests focus on the history of al-Andalus and the dissemination of the archaeological heritage.

M??s all?? de su obra cient??fica, centrada estas ??ltimas d??cadas en el mundo funerario romano, destaca por su incansable defensa de la Arqueolog??a como ciencia hist??rica, se??a de identidad y recurso para el desarrollo futuro de las sociedades contempor??neas.

Ana Ruiz-Osuna es Profesora Ayudante Doctora en la Universidad de C??rdoba (Espa??a). Es autora de varias monograf??as y art??culos sobre la monumentalizaci??n funeraria en la Antigua Roma. Lleva a??os tambi??n inmersa en la gesti??n del patrimonio hist??rico-art??stico y arqueol??gico desde m??ltiples perspectivas.

Bel??n V??zquez-Navajas es investigadora asociada en la Universidad de C??rdoba (Espa??a). Actualmente coordina el Proyecto de difusi??n cient??fica ???Arqueolog??a somos todos???, promovido por el Grupo de Investigaci??n S??sifo. Sus principales l??neas de investigaci??n se centran en la historia de al-Andalus y la difusi??n del patrimonio arqueol??gico.
