This volume brings together papers focused on the study of emotions in the Ancient World from various perspectives through an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to explore the complex network of emotional states (happiness, fear, anger, love...) based on contributions from, mainly, Ancient History, Classical Philology and Archaeology.

Ab imo pectore brings together papers focused on the study of emotions in the Ancient World from various perspectives through an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to explore the complex network of emotional states (happiness, fear, anger, love...) based on contributions from, mainly, Ancient History, Classical Philology and Archaeology.

Each chapter studies a specific emotion, in a place and in a particular period of Antiquity, from ancient Greece to imperial Rome, and through Egypt and the Ancient Near East. However, we must not lose sight of a fundamental fact: the history of emotions - within which this monograph is embedded - does not pursue the study of a particular emotion but rather the way in which they were experienced by society: in other words, the factors that led to experiencing certain emotional states and the effects they produced on the individual and the community. Only by adopting this approach we will be able to distinguish between the emotion itself and its representation in various historical processes.

El prop??sito de este libro es ofrecer al lector una colecci??n de trabajos centrados en el estudio de las emociones en el Mundo Antiguo. La ausencia de una obra parangonable a la nuestra y el relativo vac??o en la historiograf??a de habla castellana justifican el inter??s de esta publicaci??n, que aborda la percepci??n de las emociones desde diversas perspectivas y a trav??s de un enfoque interdisciplinar. As??, lo que se pretende es explorar el complejo entramado de estados emocionales (la felicidad, el miedo, la ira, el amor???) a partir de las aportaciones procedentes, principalmente, de la Historia Antigua, la Filolog??a Cl??sica y la Arqueolog??a.

Cada uno de los trabajos se focaliza en el estudio de una emoci??n concreta, en un lugar y en un per??odo determinado de la Antig??edad, desde la antigua Grecia hasta la Roma imperial, pasando por Egipto y Oriente Pr??ximo. Sin embargo, no debemos perder de vista un hecho fundamental: y es que la historia de las emociones ???en cuyo seno se incardina esta monograf??a??? no persigue como tal el estudio de una emoci??n en particular, sino la forma en que estas eran experimentadas por la sociedad. O, dicho de otro modo, qu?? factores llevaban a experimentar determinados estados emocionales y qu?? efectos produc??an en el individuo y la comunidad. Solo de este modo seremos capaces de distinguir entre la emoci??n propiamente dicha y su representaci??n en los diferentes procesos hist??ricos.

Paula Arbeloa Borb??n is a PhD student from Zaragoza (Spain) specialising in anthropomorphic magical figurines in the Graeco-Roman world.

Fernando Dom??nech Cadal??s is a PhD student at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) carrying out a doctoral thesis about the political use of fear during the Roman Republic.

Adri??n Gord??n Zan is a PhD student at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) whose research focus on the Roman imperial representation and coinage of the third century AD.

Diego Meseguer Gonz??lez holds a PhD in Ancient History. His research focuses on magical-religious practices in the Graeco-Roman World.

Claudia Serrano Aranda is a PhD student from Zaragoza (Spain) specialising in the study of the conservation of Levantine rock art in Aragon (Spain).
